The heart is for love
And the crown is for loyalty
Held high above

The Claddagh ring design originated in the ancient fishing village of Claddagh in Galway on the River Corrib (west coast of Ireland) around the 17th century by silversmith Richard Joyce.

Joyce departed from Claddagh, on a ship en-route to the plantations of the West Indies. That week he was to was to be married, but his ship was captured by Mediterranean Algerian pirates and he was sold to a Moorish goldsmith that needed an apprentice. Joyce’s talent as a silversmith was notice and therefore he was taught the goldsmith trade.

In 1689, he was released from slavery when William III demanded the release of all British prisoners. Upon hearing this, his captor offered him half of his wealth and his only daughter in marriage if he would remain in Algeria with him. Joyce declined the offer and returned to Galway where his true love awaited his return. Upon his return he smithed a very special ring to present to his lovely. This ring had a heart that represented his love, hands, his friendship and the crown, his loyalty. Legend has it, she accepted his proposal. The ring that served as a token of his love for her and was then passed down to their daughter.

Traditionally, the Claddagh ring is passed to the eldest daughter as a gift from her mother and is a family heirloom for generations. In some cases, the ring was the only savings or fortune of a family and as such, the ring was the daughter’s only inheritance. Because of this, the ring became used as an engagement ring.
